Thoughts on a photo. Keyboardists don’t often get the glory and fame like the rest of the band. To the untrained musical eye, Don Airey might just be the keyboardist who took over for the legendary Jon Lord of Deep Purple. Make no mistake, Don Airey is a longtime musical legend. Don Airey has played keyboards with Ozzy Osbourne live and on the Blizzard of Oz and Bark at the Moon albums. In fact, Don was with Ozzy, Rudy Sarzo and Randy Rhodes in Florida on that fateful day in 1982 when Randy Rhodes died in the plane crash. Don flew as a passenger in that same plane just before Randy Rhodes did.
Don Airey also played on early Whitesnake albums, including the Slip of the Tongue and 1987 Whitesnake albums. The talented keyboardist’s resume is lengthy, in terms of accomplishments and artists he has played with, including Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath's Never Say Die, Rainbow, Cozy Powell, Gary Moore, Bruce Dickenson (Tatooed Millionare), Judas Priest (Painkiller), Saxon, UFO and many, many more.
This photo was from the Deep Purple show at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut on October 9, 2019. My second occasion photographing this legendary rock band, a band that was monumental in foundation and evolution of rock and metal.
