My second show of 2020. The Guess Who and Grand Funk Railroad performed together in front of a sold out crowd this night.
The band formed in 1969 as the musical trio of Don Brewer (drums/vocals), Mel Schacher (bass) and Mark Farner (vocals/guitar). Grand Funk Railroad created the iconic rock anthem “We’re An American Band” along with one of my favorites, “I’m your Captain/Closer to Home”. A band that once sold out Shea stadium in 72 hours, faster than the Beatles did. Although Farner is no longer with the band, some forty years later the “American Band” is still out on the road touring entertaining on a regular basis. Through the years the lineup has changed, though original members Brewer and Schacher still remain.
On vocals and guitar is Max Carl, who spent several years with .38 Special, having co-written and sang lead on the 80s hit “Second Chance”. Also in the current lineup is former KISS guitarist, Bruce Kulick. A member of KISS who never wore the makeup, having performed with KISS during the ‘Unmasked’ era from 1984 through 1996. On keyboards is Tim Cashion, who had also played keyboards with Robert Palmer and Bob Seger. All three have been with the band since 2000.
